so Laura Bush has her name on a menu...

Nope there's no need to adjust the computer screen, that's right, there's a restaurant here with a dish named after Laura Bush, our current first lady. In fact there's even a room named for her that can be reserved for large parties. President George W. Bush was the first American president to officially visit Albania and they liked him and his wife so much that they just started naming all kinds of stuff after them.
So while there are several countries who don't like Americans too much these days, it's good to know that Albanians love us!
This same restaurant though, was also kind of confusing because there was a zoo outside of the place and this poor little bear was inside a cage...

There were also these chickens and birds that made me wonder if anything at this zoo area was to later become dinner...

In other news, things are going well, I'm in the process of getting things together with my apartment and should be moved in by the end of this week. Tuesday is a huge holiday here because it is the end of Ramadan, and so many places are closed and there will be a lot of eating going on. In fact I'm supposed to have homemade delicious waffles for breakfast...can't wait. Because of the holiday, many Albanian men and children have been walking around the streets playing music in celebration. This is one of the pictures that I took on Monday

Madison, MS...in Albania?!?

For the past couple of days I've been staying with a friend from Mississippi who works for the department of justice here at the Albanian embassy. How ironic, two Jacksonians ending up in Albania together huh? Well she asked me a couple of days ago if I wanted to see "the ridge" an area that reminded her of Madison, MS. Well I thought she was kidding because I had never seen any such area here in Albania, but ws I in for a surprise...

So I mean yeah, I had no clue these types of areas even existed in Albania, but hey what do you know huh? Just thought that this would be kind of interesting for folks to see

Made it Safely!

Hi Everyone!
Well I've made it safely to Tirana! What a flight, plus I was stuck in the London Gatwick Airport for over 5 hours and the dollar really sucks in London! So yeah I think that will be my last trip to London for a while because it was all too expensive for me. And on the plane to Albania I fell asleep for about 20 minutes and when the flight attendant woke me up I kind of forgot where I was for a few seconds.
Anywho, I slept until 2 this afternoon (what a horrible houseguest, I know) so my body is still adjusting to the time change. The house I'm staying at is fabulous! But I can't get adjusted to it because I move into my apartment on Monday or Tuesday which will be much different, MUCH!
I will try to upload some pictures when I get a chance. Also I will (very soon) post addresses where you can send stuff to me. The instructions are pretty specific because shipping to a personal address here is pretty nonexistent.
Okay well I guess that's all for now, toodles!

Getting ready to head out...
So in between running errands today (you know, the dry cleaner, eye doctor, getting an international driver's license), I decided to post this message to welcome everyone to the blog. I'm leaving this Wednesday evening and I will arrive in Tirana, Albania around 7:17 p.m. on Thursday September 25. For the first couple of nights I'm staying with friends in the city but I should have my apartment by next week. I'll try to write as often as I can and be on the lookout for photos as well as videos. Until next time...

Oh, one more thing...I went to vote by absentee ballot today and the guy asked about my reason for voting early. I said to him, "well I'm moving to Albania," and he responds, "Well can't you just register to vote there once you get there?" It made for a good laugh, but the good thing is I was able to vote:)
